What makes it so sought-after?
Its pedigree begins in Oakville, where the estate’s vineyards include parcels within the renowned To Kalon Vineyards. Meticulous fruit selection and aging in new French oak are central to the winery’s approach. Explore the estate.

That heritage and craftsmanship have helped make Opus One one of the world’s most coveted wines. Decanter’s producer profile explores its collector appeal.

Opus one led the way in the evolution of Napa Valley wines. The collaboration of Bordeaux and California was unheard of at the time, paving the way for Old World techniques to meet the fresh juice of Napa. Two great traditions. One shared vision.
In 1978, Napa Valley pioneer Robert Mondavi and Baron Philippe de Rothschild of Château Mouton Rothschild joined forces to bring French tradition and California innovation together. Their first vintage was 1979; the winery opened its own doors for the 1991 harvest. Read the winery’s history.

The appeal of an older vintage.

Opus One 2003
Winemakers Notes: The harvest of 2003 began on September 17th and concluded on November 2nd, the day before the start of heavy autumn rains. Blend: Cabernet Sauvignon 91%, Cabernet Franc 3%, Petit Verdot 3%, Merlot 2%, Malbec 1%
94 points Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate: Aged 17 months in French oak is a strong effort offering creme de cassis, cedarwood, white chocolate and spice box. It possesses a Bordeaux-like personality, as one might expect since Opus One is owned by Baroness Philippe de Rothschild and the winemaking team comes primarily from Pauillac. The significant tannin in the wine provides a slight austerity, but this is a full-bodied, rich effort that marks the beginning of a period when Opus One finally began to live up to the enormous potential first announced in the late 1970s by the late Baron Philippe de Rothschild and the late Robert Mondavi. Although accessible now, the 2003 will benefit from another 4-5 years of cellaring and should keep for two decades.

Opus One 2006
Winemaker Notes: A saturated black-purple, the 2006 Opus One shows aromas of fresh cut roses, licorice, dark chocolate, blackberry pie, smoked bacon and sassafras. Simultaneously silky and dense on the palate, this unfined wine offers flavors of cassis, espresso and zesty black cherry. The persistently smooth yet expansive finish of the 2006 promises long life in the bottle.
95 points Jeb Dunnuck: The 2006 Opus One is another more challenging vintage that saw abundant moisture throughout the year. Nevertheless, it doesn’t lack texture or fruit and has ripe yet integrated tannins as well as up-front, perfumed, charming aromatics of ripe darker fruits, black cherries, chocolate, and tobacco leaf.

Opus One 2010
Winemaker Notes: Aromas of blackberry, rose petals, chocolate and espresso accentuate fruity and earthy nuances. Round velvety tannins enrobe a silky texture with a touch of minerality. The flavors of dark fruit are enhanced by the well integrated acidity. The acidity and tannin structure promise a very long life ahead.
98 points Jeb Dunnuck: The 2010 Opus One is on another level and is a deep, concentrated, full-bodied, flawlessly balanced beauty. From a cooler vintage that saw significant heat spikes later in the year, it has incredible purity in its cassis and darker fruits as well as leafy tobacco, flowers, and background oak. With a great mid-palate, ripe, building tannins, and full-bodied richness on the palate, it’s a brilliant wine that has another two decades or more of prime drinking.

Opus One 2013
Blend: 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Cabernet Franc, 6% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot, 2% Malbec
Winemaker Notes: The 2013 Opus One offers splendid aromas of blueberry, cassis, and blackberries. A creamy entry gives way to layers of complexity which unfold in the mid-palate with velvety tannins enrobing a center of concentrated black-fruit. Elegantly balanced, the acidity and core structure deliver a persistent finish with hints of dark chocolate.
100 points James Suckling: The greatest Opus ever. Terrific aromas of crushed black currants, blueberries and flowers with hints of sweet tobacco. Roses continue to exude opulence and class. Full body, superb balance of ultra-fine tannins and vibrant acidity. Complex aftertaste of black fruits and citrus fruit. Extremely persistent. So approachable now and enjoyable. But will be even better in 2019 and beyond.
